My Favourite Dumbbell Leg Exercises for Easy At Home Workouts

Hello and welcome back to the blog! Today I’m sharing some of my favourite dumbbell leg exercises. These are perfect for both the gym and at home, but I especially love them for at home workouts. All you need is a set of dumbbells, no fancy machines required.

A pair of adjustable dumbbells and a water bottle are on the floor. A text overlay reads "My Favourite Dumbbell Leg Exercises for Easy At Home Workouts".

As much as I used to love going to the gym, these days I’m all about simple, no fuss workouts at home. I don’t have to drive anywhere (which is especially hard on dark, cold, snowy mornings), and I never have to wait for equipment.

Bookmark this post so you can come back to it on lower body days. You’ll have a go-to list of at home leg exercises that you can mix and match depending on your goals – all without leaving the house.

Why I Love Dumbbell Leg Exercises at Home

Like I mentioned above, the convenience is unmatched. There’s no commute and no worrying about whether equipment will be available. These dumbbell leg exercises can easily be done at home in less time than it would take to wait for machines at the gym.

Working out at home also feels more relaxed, at least for me. As an introvert, I enjoy moving my body on my own rather than around a crowd. While there’s definitely something special about group fitness classes or yoga studios, there’s also something really nice about focusing on yourself without distractions.

Another reason I love at home leg exercises is how easy they are to adjust. If I didn’t sleep well or I’m low on energy, I can scale things back. If I’m feeling strong, I can push a little more. And if I’m sore, I can take a rest day without any pressure.

What You Need for These Exercises

The best part about these at home leg exercises is how simple they are. All you really need is a set or two of dumbbells.

I usually go a bit heavier for lower body exercises since those muscles are larger, but if you’re just starting out, lighter weights are more than enough. You can always build up over time. There’s no need to buy everything at once.

A yoga mat is another helpful addition. It gives you a non-slip surface and a bit of cushioning, especially for exercises where you’re on your knees. I’m all about making workouts as comfortable as possible.

You’ll also want a bit of space to move. It doesn’t have to be a full home gym. Just a small, clear area like a corner of your living room or basement works perfectly. Just make sure there’s nothing in your way.

My Favourite Dumbbell Leg Exercises

In this section, I’ll walk you through my go-to at home leg exercises. Remember to only do what feels good for your body. If something doesn’t feel right, stop and adjust.

If you’re new to working out, it’s always a good idea to check with your doctor or healthcare provider before starting.

Goblet Squats

Goblet squats are a simple and effective alternative to barbell squats, especially for at home workouts. They target your glutes, quads, hamstrings, and core.

I love them because they require just one dumbbell and very little space.

To perform a goblet squat, hold one end of a dumbbell at chest level. Stand with your feet a comfortable distance apart, then slowly lower down by bending at your hips and knees. Once you’ve reached the end of your range of motion, press through your feet to return to standing.

Romanian Deadlifts

I avoided these for the longest time because they felt intimidating, but they’re actually very approachable once you get the hang of them.

Start standing with your feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand. Let the dumbbells hang in front of you as you hinge at your hips. Lower them along your legs until you feel a stretch in your hamstrings (this will look different for everyone), then return to standing.

Reverse Lunges

I used to struggle with lunges because I was using too much weight. If that’s you too, try starting with lighter weights, or even just your bodyweight.

Stand with your feet hip width apart, holding dumbbells at your sides. Step one leg back and lower into a lunge, aiming for about 90 degree bends in both knees. Push through your front foot to return to standing.

The key here is balance and control. Take your time and focus on steady movement.

Step Ups

For step ups, you’ll need something sturdy to step onto, like a bench or a solid chair. Just make sure it’s stable and won’t move.

Stand in front of your step with dumbbells at your sides. Step up with one foot, bring the other foot to meet it, then step back down with control.

This is such a practical movement. It mirrors everyday activities like climbing stairs or hiking.

Calf Raises

This is a simple but effective exercise to finish your workout.

Stand with the balls of your feet on a step, holding dumbbells at your sides. Lift your heels as high as you can, then slowly lower them back down.

It’s a great add on if you want to round out your leg day.

A Gentle Reminder

Your workout doesn’t have to be perfect.

If you’re not feeling up to it, it’s okay to take a break. Rest is just as important as movement. You don’t need a complicated plan or intense routine. Sometimes a couple of walks and one or two strength sessions each week is more than enough.

It’s also not about constantly doing more. It can simply be about moving your body in a way that feels good.
