Friday Favorites: Birthday Cakes + Warmer Weather + A New Garmin
Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week and has something fun planned for the weekend.
Today is my brother’s birthday, so I started the morning by baking him a birthday cake. Every year when I make his cake, he requests something different. Usually it involves candy either between the layers of cake or piled on top.

This year’s request was pretty tame compared to past creations that featured gummy worms, gummy bears, and cherries. He asked for a red velvet cake with vanilla frosting and almonds, which honestly felt downright elegant by comparison.

It’s hard to believe my younger brother is already 40. That means I’m even older, which simply cannot be correct. In all seriousness though, I’m incredibly lucky to have him as a brother. He’s such a genuinely good guy, and I’m grateful for him every day.

The past week has also been unseasonably warm here in Calgary, which has been such a nice surprise. I’ve been spending more time outside and sneaking in afternoon walks when it’s been the warmest part of the day. It definitely doesn’t feel like spring yet (we still have a few months of winter ahead of us), but even a brief break from the cold feels so refreshing.
Another recent favorite is a new fitness tracker. I’ve used Fitbits for the past decade or so, but my most recent one was very much on its last legs. It wouldn’t hold a charge for more than a day, and I felt like I was constantly taking it off to recharge. On top of that, the tracking was wildly inaccurate. It regularly told me I’d climbed over 100 flights of stairs in a single day, which I can confidently say never happened.

A few weeks ago, I started looking into other fitness trackers and decided to try a Garmin. When the model I had my eye on went on sale, that sealed the deal. I ordered it on Tuesday, and it arrived surprisingly fast yesterday afternoon. I’ve only had it for about 24 hours, but so far I’m really happy with it. Once I’ve had more time to use it, I’ll definitely share a more detailed review and my overall thoughts.
All in all, it’s been one of those weeks filled with little joys: homemade cake, unexpected warm weather, and something new that I’m excited to use. I’m heading into the weekend feeling grateful and hopeful, and I hope you are too. Let me know in the comments what your favorite thing from this week was, or if you have anything fun planned for the weekend ahead.
