What I Read: October 2025

There’s just something about October that makes me reach for all things spooky, atmospheric, and just a little unsettling. Maybe it’s the darker evenings, maybe it’s all the Halloween decor popping up everywhere -but this time of year always puts me in the mood for a good creepy read. While I didn’t make my way through a huge stack of books this month, the ones I did pick up were perfectly eerie for October. From haunted houses to gothic castles, here’s what kept me turning pages this month.

I really enjoyed Nestlings! It started off with a strong Rosemary’s Baby vibe – think mysterious neighbors, unsettling noises, and a building that feels alive in all the wrong ways. As the story went on though, it completely took on a life of its own. I don’t want to give too much away (because it’s one of those books that’s better the less you know going in), but it turned out to be a type of horror novel I don’t usually pick up.

I’m actually glad it surprised me. It reminded me that stepping outside my usual reading comfort zone can lead to some of my favorite finds. The story managed to be both deeply creepy and full of unexpected twists that kept me guessing right to the end.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely! It’s dark, unsettling, and has that “can’t put it down” quality that makes it a perfect October read.

This one is a classic for a reason – and it’s also an annual re-read for me every Halloween. The first time I read The Haunting of Hill House, I remember being completely terrified. It’s such a quiet, psychological kind of horror. There are no obvious ghosts or monsters, but Shirley Jackson’s writing lets your imagination do all the work. Somehow, that makes it even scarier.

I first discovered Jackson in high school when we read The Lottery, and I’ve been a fan ever since. After university, I watched the 1963 film adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House, which captures the eerie, claustrophobic feeling of the book so well. Julie Harris is absolutely perfect as Eleanor. The 90’s movie remake, though? Not worth your time. And while I did enjoy the Netflix series that shares the same title, it’s completely different from the book – so go in expecting a new story inspired by the original rather than a faithful adaptation.

Every time I revisit this novel, I pick up on something new. It’s the perfect slow-burn spooky read that gives you chills without ever needing to show you what’s lurking in the shadows.

I’m about halfway through The Darkling Bride right now, and I’m loving it. If you’re into gothic mysteries set in old, crumbling castles with long-held family secrets, this one’s for you.

The story takes place at an ancient castle in the Irish countryside, where an archivist is hired to catalog the castle’s impressive (and eerie) library. While she’s working, she becomes tangled up in the local folklore – and discovers a chilling connection to a decades-old double murder that happened in that very room. It’s moody, atmospheric, and full of that deliciously gothic suspense that’s perfect for a rainy fall night.

I can’t wait to see how it ends, but so far, it’s been such a fun blend of mystery and history with a spooky edge.

Even though I didn’t get through a ton of books this month, the ones I picked really fit the October mood. They were dark, atmospheric, and full of twists. There’s something so cozy about curling up under a blanket with a creepy book while the wind howls outside (bonus points if you’ve got one of these cozy fall activities planned too).

As we move into November, I’m planning to mix things up with some lighter reads. Maybe something cozy or feel-good before diving into all the festive reads in December.

What about you? What have you been reading lately? Let me know your current favorite in the comments. I love hearing book recommendations!
