Friday Favorites: A Haircut, Book, and Quesadillas
It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of September. The days are getting shorter, the mornings feel crisp, and yet this past week in Calgary has been filled with the most beautiful sunshine. It’s been one of those weeks that makes you want to soak up every bit of warmth before fall really settles in. I’ve been enjoying walks outside, cozy evenings at home, and of course, a few little things that brightened my week.
Today I’m sharing some of those favorites – from a much needed haircut, to a spooky new read that’s perfect for fall, to a recipe that’s quickly becoming a go to in my dinner rotation.

Haircut
On Wednesday I finally booked an appointment for a haircut. It had been over a year since my last one! My hair was definitely overdue for some attention, and it felt so good to get it freshened up.
I’ve been going to Alannah at Blue Aurora Studio for a few years now, and I’ve loved every single cut I’ve gotten from her. She’s so talented, and I can’t recommend her enough.

This time my hair had gotten quite long, so I asked her to take off about 5–6 inches, leaving it at collarbone length. Other than that, I gave her free rein (as long as bangs weren’t involved!) and she worked her magic. I’m so happy with how it turned out. It feels light, bouncy, and so much easier to style. I’m not exaggerating when I say my blowdry time has been cut in half!
A horror novel
Earlier this week I started reading Nestlings by Nat Cassidy, and it’s been the perfect pick with Halloween just around the corner. A friend described it to me as having Rosemary’s Baby vibes, and since that movie is both classic and creepy, I was instantly intrigued.

The story begins with a married couple, Ana and Reid, and their one-year-old daughter as they move into an exclusive New York City apartment building. Ana had a very difficult birth, which left her using a wheelchair, and she’s also navigating some mental health struggles. Reid is incredibly supportive, but the new apartment has an unsettling energy that’s already giving me goosebumps.
I’m only about 15% into the book, but it’s already taken its first eerie twist. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here. I’ll be sure to share a full review once I finish reading.
Black bean quesadillas
If you’ve been following along for a while, you know I’ve been incorporating more meatless meals into my week. One recipe that has quickly become a staple is the Black Bean Quesadillas from Budget Bytes.
They’re hearty, flavorful, and so satisfying that you don’t even miss the meat. Even the meat-eaters in my household enjoyed them, which says a lot. The beans work so well as the main protein, and the filling is packed with flavor.

Another bonus: they’re super easy to throw together with pantry staples. The only thing I had to pick up was tortillas. I ended up tweaking the filling proportions a bit, and it made enough for two nights. Honestly, I think they were even tastier the second night after the flavors had more time to meld together.
Wrapping up
And that’s a little peek at what’s been bringing me joy this week – a fresh haircut, a creepy-cool new read, and a simple but delicious dinner that I’ll definitely be making again.
