What I Read June 2025
In today’s blog post I’m sharing what I read in June.
I didn’t read a lot this month, but I really enjoyed one book that I read this month. It’s one of those books that you know will stay with you for months after you finish reading it. Interested in other books I’ve read? Check out this link.
Broken Bayou by Jennifer Moorhead
I love reading books that are set in times or places that I haven’t experienced. That was the case with Broken Bayou by Jennifer Moorhead. The book takes place in a small Louisiana town. The furthest south I’ve ever been in the States is North Carolina, and that was as a kid to visit some family. Needless to say, small town Louisiana is pretty different from big city Canada. Having a setting that’s so different from my every day was pretty fun to read.
Broken Bayou follows a child psychologist who returns to her hometown after experiencing a scandal in her professional life. She had a complicated childhood (which inspired her career choice), and she comes face to face with her past and ends up solving a mystery that has haunted her for her entire life.
Breaking Free by Rachel Jeffs
Some of my favorite books to listen to as audiobooks are non fiction ones that are read by the author. I think I liked Breaking Free more as an audiobook than I would have as a book that I would have had to read.
Breaking Free is about the life of the author, Rachel Jeffs. She’s the daughter of infamous polygamous leader and felon, Warren Jeffs. Rachel talks about her childhood all the way up to the aftermath of Warren Jeff’s incarceration. Needless to say, the book covers some heavy topics like child abuse, so be sure to know that ahead of time.
The main thing I came away with from Breaking Free was how Warren Jeff’s (and the leaders both before and after him) were able to create an all consuming culture that enabled abuse of all kinds. They ruled with an iron fist and were able to make it so that the people who followed them weren’t able to see anything beyond what he wanted them to see.
All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
I just finished this book on Saturday night. I stayed up way too late reading. That book I mentioned at the beginning of this post? That was All The Light We Cannot See. I actually had to take a break reading it about half way through because it felt very heavy. On the other hand the writing was amazing. I have no idea how it took me this long to read it.
All The Light We Cannot See follows two children, Werner and Marie Laure. Werner’s story starts in Austria with his little sister, Jutta. They’re both orphans living in a children’s home run by a kind French woman. Marie Laura starts out losing her sight, while living with her father in Paris. Her father is the key maker for the natural history museum in Paris, and Marie Laure goes to work with him every day. The book follows their two journeys throughout WWII in Europe. Their stories end up coming together at the end of the book in an unimaginable way. The very end of the book chronicles how their brief meeting changes the lives of those around them decades later.
