Friday Favorites: Volunteering + A New Coffee Shop

Girl Guides
This past week was the last meeting of the group of Pathfinders and Rangers that I volunteer with. I’ve been volunteering with Girl Guides for a few years now and I’ve really enjoyed it. We had an advancement ceremony for the teens who are moving onto the next branch and welcomed in the ones who will be joining us next year.
As much as people complain about “the younger generation”, it’s been a pleasure to spend time with these young women since September. They’re smart, thoughtful, welcoming, and happy to help each other out. As much as I volunteer to help them, I get so much out of it too. I’m going to miss them!

Broken Bayou
I just finished reading Broken Bayou by Jennifer Moorhead. The setting was really fun. I love when books are set somewhere different from what I’ve experienced, and this one took place in Louisiana. I’ve never been there, but I’d love to visit one day. While it read a bit like a book written by a debut author, I thought the twists and turns on the plot made up for it. The main character is a child psychologist, so there was quite a bit of discussion about mental health throughout the book. If you’re looking for a fun to read thriller, check out Broken Bayou.
A new coffee shop
I’ve been trying out some new to me coffee shops over the last few weeks. The last one I went to is probably my favorite so far. If you’re in Calgary you need to check out GN Cafe.
GN Cafe is in the same space as a salon. They’re right on the corner, so one side has doors to the salon, and the other side has doors to the salon. It’s a bit strange, but it’s so worth it. The cafe side has a small sitting area near the counter, but if you head up the stairs there’s a bunch of seating upstairs. It’s the perfect spot to catch up with a friend or get some work done on your laptop.

I ordered a strawberry sparkler. Not only was it pretty, but it was also so good! Think of a cross between carbonated water and real strawberry flavoring. I will definitely be back. I can see myself bringing my computer with me next time to get a blog post written.
