In today’s post I’m sharing a few of my favorite things from the past week.
This week has felt like it was jam packed. Between planning and getting the last few things ready for Guide camp this weekend (more on that below) and getting some reading done and an assignment submitted for my continuing ed class, it’s felt like a lot going on.
Camping
I’ll be spending the next three weekends camping with Girl Guides. I leave this afternoon for two nights with the Guide group that I volunteer with. We also invited the Embers (7 and 8 years old) who will be coming up to Guides (9 to 11 years old) next year so they can meet the adults as well as the other girls. It’ll be the first time that some of them have ever slept in tents and they’ll be cooking their own food (with adult supervision and help if needed), so I think they’ll have a lot of fun. Saturday afternoon they’ll be building shelters shelters from tarps, ropes, and anything they can find around out campsite (rocks, sticks, etc). They had a lot of fun building snow forts at our fall camp back in October, so I think they’ll enjoy doing something similar this time.
It’s so much fun to be able to be able to give back to my community. AS a girl, I was in Guiding for 9 years. I had so much fun and learned so much. I met my best friend though Guiding. I got to try wind surfing, wood working, and orienteering at camps that I wouldn’t have been able to experience otherwise. Being able to give others the chance to make similar memories makes all the work planning and dealing with tears and homesickness worth it.
Camping cot
Speaking of camping, about a month ago I decided to splurge on a camping cot (affiliate link) that I can sleep on in my tent. I took it out for two nights a few weeks ago and it made sleeping in a tent so much more comfortable! I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable it was. Honestly, I wish I had bought one before. It makes such a difference to sleep up off the group. And even getting into and out of bed is easier because I’m 18 or 20 inches off the ground. I feel like it’s an indication of my age, but having that little bit of height makes such a big difference. I counted that I’ll be tent camping 14 nights this spring and summer, so I figure I’ll get my money’s worth from it this year alone.
Orange is the New Bloack
I know I’m years and years behind on this, but I’ve been binge watching Orange is the New Black on Netflix. I’ve had lots of friends recommend it to me but it still took me awhile to get into it. I had watched a few episodes previously, but it didn’t suck me in like it did this time around. I’m mid way through the sixth season now, and I’m already a bit sad that I only have a season and a half left to watch. I’m really hoping that the ending is done well.
Ever watch Orange is the New Black? Were you ever in Guiding or Scouting as a kid? Let me know in the comments below.
