The weekend is just about here! I’m especially looking forward to this weekend because we’ll be celebrating my brother’s birthday. More on that below. I hope you all have something fun planned for the next few days too. It’s supposed to warm up starting tomorrow (we’ve had a lot of cold weather and snow lately), so my boyfriend and I have plans to meet to take his dog for a walk. I haven’t seen them in a couple weeks so I’m excited to be able to spend some time with them.
And now onto my favorite things!
My brother’s birthday cake
Like I mentioned, it’s my brother’s birthday this weekend. I always make his cake for him, and every year he requests something different. This year he wanted chocolate cake, cherries, and vanilla frosting. I thought I’d make a layer cake, put cherry pie filling between each layer of cake, and top it off with maraschino cherries on top of the frosting. It’s always kind of fun to figure out how to make his request a reality. I’m hoping it turns out as tasty as I think it’ll be!
Last year he wanted to go out for a steak dinner, which we did. It felt like the last time we were able to celebrate a birthday “normally”. I have a feeling that birthdays are probably going to feel a bit strange for awhile still. It’s funny to think that a year ago it wasn’t a big deal that we all ate cake that someone had just blown out candles on.
The Taming of the Queen
I’m still working my way through some of the books that I’ve borrowed from the library. I’m currently reading The Taming of the Queen (affiliate link). It follows the life of Katheryn Parr, the sixth and final queen to Henry VIII. She outlived him by just over a year. It’s historical fiction, so it’s based on real events. It’s become a favorite genre of mine as an adult.
I love Philippa Gregory’s books. She always writes her books from the point of view of female characters. Throughout history we always hear about the men, so it’s refreshing to hear about historical events from a woman’s perspective. Once I’ve finished reading his one, I think there’s only one more Philippa Gregory book that I need to read and then I’ve read all of them. I’m clearly a fan of hers.
In the Cab-ana nail polish
I recently bought this nail polish called In the Cab-ana (affiliate link) and I’m loving it! It’s the perfect shade of light blue. I have a feeling it’s going to be a go to color for me during the spring and summer. Make sure to follow me on Instagram for what nail polish I’m currently wearing.
I’m currently on day number 5 of this nail polish and it still looks great. (The above photo is actually from Tuesday). My typical nail polish routine involves Essie base coat (affiliate link), two coats of nail polish, and two layers of Essie top coat. It’s definitely a bit more work with the base and top coats, but I find that my nail polish lasts so much longer with the extra effort.
What’s a favorite thing of yours from the past week?
