Today I’m sharing a few of my favorite things from the last few days.
We’ve had the first few hot days of the summer here in Calgary this week. It feels so good! We have a lot of cold weather here with the long winters, so I’m taking in as much of the hot weather as I can right now! How’s the weather where you are? Do you enjoy the hot summer weather or enjoy the cold winter days more? My favorite season is autumn, so I’m definitely looking forward to that in a few more months.
I’m writing about a few of my favorite things from the last week today. I always have fun writing these posts every week. It’s so easy to get caught up in the everyday stuff, so it’s nice to spend a bit of time sharing what’s made life a bit more fun lately.
We bought some tomatoes earlier this week that tasted so good! The growing season here in Calgary is pretty short, so outside of summer our tomatoes at the grocery store have to travel for awhile to get here. That means that being able to eat fresh tomatoes is a big treat. They taste so different from the ones I buy at the store in January. I have some tomatoes growing in my garden again this year, but I think it’ll still be a month or so before any of them are ready to pick. You better believe that I’m looking forward to eating them! There’s nothing better than a tomato freshly picked from the garden the day after it rains.
I sliced up half a tomato and paired it with some tuna salad and coleslaw for a lunch one day this week. I also had a tomato sandwich which was so good! Such a simple meal but it tasted amazing. What’s your favorite way to eat fresh tomatoes?
I started reading this book back in 2019 but wasn’t able to finish it before I had to return it to the library. I finally got a copy of it again from my library (I had to wait on hold for a long time), and I’m so glad that I’ll be able to finish it this time. Mrs Everything (affiliate link) is such a good book! I’ve read other books my Jennifer Weiner and really enjoyed them as well. It’s the perfect book to relax with in the backyard at the end of the day. If you follow me on Instagram you’ll know that I’ve shared about it there this week.
Here’s the synopsis from Goodreads:
Jo and Bethie Kaufman were born into a world full of promise.
Growing up in 1950s Detroit, they live in a perfect “Dick and Jane” house, where their roles in the family are clearly defined. Jo is the tomboy, the bookish rebel with a passion to make the world more fair; Bethie is the pretty, feminine good girl, a would-be star who enjoys the power her beauty confers and dreams of a traditional life.
But the truth ends up looking different from what the girls imagined. Jo and Bethie survive traumas and tragedies. As their lives unfold against the background of free love and Vietnam, Woodstock and women’s lib, Bethie becomes an adventure-loving wild child who dives headlong into the counterculture and is up for anything (except settling down). Meanwhile, Jo becomes a proper young mother in Connecticut, a witness to the changing world instead of a participant. Neither woman inhabits the world she dreams of, nor has a life that feels authentic or brings her joy. Is it too late for the women to finally stake a claim on happily ever after?
Citrus Fruit Nuun
I finished up another tube of Nuun – this time one of my favorite flavors. The citrus fruit flavor (affiliate link) is a perfect mix of the sour and sweet of citrus fruit. I always add a tablet of Nuun to my water bottle during workouts or if I’m going to be working outside in the sun for awhile. I love that Nuun is an easy way for me to get in some extra electrolytes when I’m sweating. What’s your favorite flavor of Nuun?
In terms of this weekend I don’t have much planned other than helping my dad celebrate his birthday on Sunday. It’s a big one for him, so my brother and I are putting together some of his favorite foods for the day. I’m also going to be baking a birthday cake for him. I’m the “official” baker of birthday cakes in my family, so whoever I’m making it for gets to pick exactly what they want. Previous years he’s requested everything from chocolate cake to cheesecake.
Have any exciting plans for the weekend? What’s a favorite thing of yours from the past week?
