What a week. I know I’ve been doing a lot of learning, reading, looking inward, and having tough conversations with the people I love surrounding racism. I think a lot of other people are too. I don’t even know where to start. I’m committing to being actively anti-racist going forward. That means everything from making sure I call out racism when I see it with my family and friends, to learning about systemic racism, and making sure that my yoga classes (and the yoga community as a whole in Calgary) is more inclusive. There’s so much work to do. I’m just starting to see that now.
I don’t think there’s any way that you can really transition from such a heavy topic to a weekend recap, but here we go.
Friday night was a pretty laid back night in. I decided to order from Skip the Dishes and got a Five Guys little cheeseburger and french fries delivered to the house. It was delicious. I’ve been on a serious hamburger kick lately. There’s just something about them that tastes really good right now.
On Saturday morning I was up bright and early for a Peloton app workout. I went with a 30 minute full body strength workout followed by a 10 minute full body stretch. The strength workout left my legs feeling like jello – probably from all of the single dumbbell thrusters. I was feeling pretty sore on Sunday. On the bright side, working so hard made the 10 minutes of stretching feel extra good.
If you’re using the Peloton app too I’d love to add you as a friend on there. Leave your username in the comments below or add me directly – I’m getfitfiona.
I hard boiled another batch of eggs. It’s so much faster and easier to do it in the Instant Pot than it is on the stove. It’s hard to believe that I did it in a pot of water on the stove for so long. Of course I use the Instant Pot for lots of other things too, but it’s definitely my favorite for making eggs – it’s just so fast and easy.
I had borrowed The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas from my library earlier in the week. I finished it on Saturday night after only having read it for a few days. It was an eye opening experience to get a small look into what it’s like to be a teen with a lot less privilege than I have. Being a teenager is so hard, let alone having to deal with police brutality, having friends die right in front of you, and all of the other things that Starr, the main character faces as a Black teen. If you’re looking for a book to read about racism I highly recommend this one.
My workout on Sunday morning was another Peloton app workout. I did a 20 minute walk plus a glutes and legs bootcamp. I knew that with being sore from the day before I wouldn’t be able to run, so I figured that an interval walking workout would be a good alternative. I finished off with a 10 minute full body stretch.
I’m really noticing how tight I am, so I’ve been trying to do a stretching session everyday. I love that I can filter them on the app to as short as 5 minutes. I’m hoping that after a few weeks of being consistent I’ll notice a difference in my flexibility. My fingers are crossed!
Once I got showered and dressed after my workout I drove over to the grocery store to pick up the grocery order that I’d put together online. I’m still really liking that service. I’m pretty sure I’ll be using it even once we don’t have to deal with a pandemic. It’s super fast to put together the order and picking it up at the store is super quick. I can stay 2 meters away from the person who brings it out and I don’t have to go into the store.
Getting groceries had become a stressful thing for me once I realized how bad the coronavirus was. The last time I went into a grocery store to get groceries I nearly had a panic attack. Not fun. I’m so grateful that there are alternatives right now to going into the store.
As you can see from the photo above, it was a pretty rainy day on Sunday. It rained on and off (mostly on) for the whole day. I had wanted to get out for a walk but it was just too cold and wet. So I cleaned the house instead. At least I was productive if I couldn’t be outside? Thankfully the weather is supposed to improve over the next few days and should be in the low 20’s C (or high 60’s/low 70’s F for my American readers) by Wednesday. I’m looking forward to having the sun back!
