Today I’m sharing some of my favorite things from the past week.
How did it suddenly become the last week of August? It’s hard to believe that it’s the Labor Day long weekend and September is practically here. I know I’ve said it before but 2019 is flying by.
As usual for Fridays here on Get Fit Fiona, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite things from the past week. I’d love to hear yours too – leave in the comments at the bottom of this post.

The German Midwife
I finished reading The German Midwife (affiliate link) by Mandy Robotham a few days ago and I really enjoyed it. While the ending felt a bit rushed, I thought that overall the story was pretty good.

If you enjoy reading historical fiction books about WWII I would highly recommend this one. Here’s the synopsis from Amazon:
Germany, 1944. A prisoner in the camps, Anke Hoff is doing what she can to keep her pregnant campmates and their newborns alive.
But when Ankeβs work is noticed, she is chosen for a task more dangerous than she could ever have imagined. Eva Braun is pregnant with the FΓΌhrerβs child, and Anke is assigned as her midwife.
Before long, Anke is faced with an impossible choice. Does she serve the Reich she loathes and keep the baby alive? Or does she sacrifice an innocent child for the good of a broken world?
Anne with an E
I started re-watching season 2 of Anne with an E on Netflix last week because season 3 will be airing on CBC next month. The Anne of Green Gables books are some of my absolute favorites, so being able to see the characters re-imagined has been so much fun. I like season 2 as much as I liked the first season. Although the show doesn’t follow the books exactly, it’s still a lot of fun to watch.
Watching Anne with an E makes me want to re-read all the books again. Committing to that is quite an undertaking though because there’s 8 books! It also makes me want to visit Prince Edward Island. I haven’t been there yet but it’s definitely at the top of my list of places that I want to travel to.
Cooler weather
It’s definitely starting to feel like fall is beginning with the cooler weather here in Calgary. I’m enjoying the cooler, crisp air in the mornings when I’m going to the gym.
Fall is my favorite season so I’m looking forward to colorful fall leaves, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and sweater weather. What’s not to like about the next few months?
Brownies
I was craving brownies so I picked up a boxed mix and made them on Wednesday afternoon. It had been a long time since I’d last made them, so I think that made them taste extra good. I’m usually not much of a chocolate fan, so it’s funny that I was crazing brownies.

When I took them out of the oven they made the whole kitchen smell amazing. There’s something about that fudgy, chewy texture that’s just so good!
Straight fit black khakis
A few weeks ago I bought these mid rise straight fit black khakis from the Gap factory outlet. When I tried them on in the fitting room I instantly liked the straight fit.

Now that I’ve been wearing them for a few weeks they’ve quickly become one of my favorite pairs of pants. The black goes with just about anything and I can see myself wearing them a ton as we go into the fall.
As for my plans plans for the weekend, I actually don’t have many. Other than getting together with my boyfriend and a Group Power class at the gym on Sunday my weekend is pretty open. It’s going to be nice to enjoy the extra day on Monday. Long weekends always seem to come along just when you need them.
