Today I’ll be reviewing Jillian Michaels Extreme Shed & Shred (affiliate link). Both workouts were longer than the usual 20 to 30 minute that I’m used to with Jillian Michaels. As with her other workouts, the only equipment needed were dumbbells and a yoga mat if you’re working out on a hard surface.
Level 1 Even though the first workout is called level 1, be prepared for a tough workout! Jillian is front and center demonstrating the moves and sharing cues to ensure you have proper form, while there are two others just behind her demonstrating the beginner and advanced modifications. She leads you through each circuit twice before moving on to the next one. Even though it clocked in at 45 minutes, this workout was able to hold my attention because Jillian included a variety of moves – everything from plyometrics, yoga, kickboxing, to cardio.
Level 2 As the name suggests, this workout was tougher than the first one. There were still beginner and advanced modifications given. I’m not quite sure what was different with this workout (other than being 10 minutes longer than the first one), but I found myself getting bored and checking to see how much time was left. I don’t think 10 minutes would make a big difference, so I think it was that the workout just wasn’t holding my attention like level 1 did. My favorite move from this workout were the side lunges. They look deceptively simple, but do they ever work your legs! I also liked the way she included some of the warrior poses from yoga into this workout.
All in all, I enjoyed this DVD. I see myself doing both workouts again. The only thing I felt like it was lacking was in upper body moves. There were lots of squats and lunges, but I felt like I was missing out on really working my upper body thoroughly. I thought Jillian Michaels Extreme Shed & Shred (affiliate link) was pretty creative in the way it included all sorts of moves together that felt like it flowed from one to another.
What’s your favorite workout DVD to do at home?
