I don’t think I’ve mentioned it on the blog yet, but I attended HTML500 a couple weeks ago. They basically give you an intro lesson on HTML and CSS in the morning, and after lunch they give you a project to work on with your new found skills. Every table had a mentor – someone who’s a web developer – to help with any questions we had.
While I’d learned most of it previously (I’ve been to a few introductory courses before), it was great to get a refresher. Our mentor was awesome and was able to explain the answers to my questions in a way that I could understand. I believe that the next city they’ll be in is Toronto, so if you live there you should definitely check it out. It was also a great way to meet new people and network.
Second Cup has the best white hot chocolates ever. Seriously, so good. It’s usually what I order whenever I go there. I hadn’t had one in awhile, so I decided I needed one the other day so I made my way to Second Cup. You also can’t go wrong with a coffee shop that has free wifi either.
I received a fun package from Manitoba Harvest this week. I’ll be using the hemp hearts in a recipe, so be on the look out for that on the blog in the next week or two. I’ve never tried using them before, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they can be used.
I feel like I’ve been reading a lot the last few months. This week I finished The King’s Curse by Philippa Gregory. It was exactly what I was expecting from a Philippa Gregory book – historical fiction told from the view of a female character. It’s the sixth book in The Cousins War, but I don’t think you’d need to have read the previous ones in the series to enjoy The King’s Curse.
I’ve been trying to fight off a migraine for most of the week. I think it might be weather related (it got cold and snowy, and then warmed up), but I just can’t seem to shake it. I’ll think I’ll be feeling better then a couple hours later it hits me again. Working under those horrible fluorescent lights on Tuesday didn’t help matters.
This week I ended up at Gruman’s. It’s a really good Jewish deli in downtown Calgary. They serve breakfast and lunch, and then close at 3:30 for the day. As soon as our server told us that the special was their smoked meat pizza I knew I wanted to try it. It had a latke crust, smoked meat, sauerkraut, Russian sauce, and cheese on top. It might sound like a weird combination, but it all worked so well together! She also mentioned that this pizza won second place at YYC Pizza Week, and I can see why. It was a ton of food, so I ended up getting what I couldn’t finish packed up to take home. It was just as good as leftovers the next day.
This weekend I have some fun plans. My boyfriend and I are going to see the Calgary Flames play the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. There’s a huge rivalry between the Flames and Canucks, so I’m expecting it to be a great hockey game. I can’t stand the Sedin twins who play for Vancouver, so I’ll be looking forward to seeing them lose in person. These are the tickets my brother got me for Christmas, so I’m excited to finally be using them.
Then on Sunday I’m meeting up with some people from Twitter. They meet up once or twice a month, and I’ve been meaning to go, but it just hasn’t happened yet. I’m finally going to make it on Sunday though!
What was the highlight of your week? Have you used hemp hearts before?
Wow that pizza looks amazing!! My highlight of this week was a bonfire with my kids and friends- so much fun. I use hemp hearts on my families oatmeal as well as in the bread I make.
Bonfires are so much fun! While I don’t have one in my yard I do have a few friends that have fire pits. It’s so much fun to sit around one and talk into late into the night.
I’ve had a smoked meat pizza like that from a Jewish deli I used to go to all the time near Detroit- OMG. SO flipping amazing!
It’s nice to know I’m not crazy in thinking that it was delicious!
What a cool event, I need to learn code so badly! haha Hemp hearts are so good, I love how versatile they are!
Great post!!

Although I don’t know very much the little bit of code I do know has been really helpful fixing things on the blog. I’d definitely recommend taking a beginner class, even if it’s only a few hours long.
I just starting exploring with hemp hearts too-late to the party and love them!
