Jillian Michaels Beginner Shred DVD Review

If you’re just starting out on your fitness journey and you’re not sure where to start, go with this DVD. Jillian Michaels has a reputation for being a tough trainer. When I saw that this DVD was called Beginner Shred I was skeptical. By the time I was done the first workout though I was convinced that this was actually a series for beginners.

Workout 1

I thought this workout was easy to do while still being a great workout. I was sweaty by the end of it, but no individual move was too tough or complicated for a beginner. This 25 minute workout was full of cuing and form reminders. These workouts are marketed towards people who are new to fitness. Or even coming back to working out after awhile of not being active. I thought this was great. Even if you do workout regularly, it’s never a bad thing to be reminded of correct form. Another thing I liked about this workout was that they were all low impact. If you have an injury and can’t do a lot of jumping around, these workouts are for you.

Workout 2

While I’d still qualify this workout as one appropriate for beginners, it’s a little bit tougher than the first one. My favourite move was sumo squats and overhead tricep dips. As you rise from the squat you raise the weights in your hands from behind your head to above your head. Just like in the first workout, I thought Jillian was very encouraging. In the 25 minutes it took to do, I felt like I got in a great full body workout.

Workout 3

The last workout on this DVD, while also being a great starting point for beginners, it built on the first two workouts. Basic moves were modified a bit to be a little more harder. Of course there were modifications for both easier and harder moves on all three workouts, so this DVD can grow with you as you get more in shape. It clocked in at just under 25 minutes. My favourite move from this workout was a combination of donkey kicks and round kicks on all fours.

Overall I thought this was a great DVD. It didn’t get too complicated or technical so that people who are just starting their fitness journey could do it, while still allowing for modifications for a tougher workout for others who have been at it for awhile. With all the workouts being 25 minutes I think it’s a great way for people to start incorporating more activity into their life without rearranging their schedule.

This is one of my favorite classic workouts. It is great if you aren’t feeling inspired or just don’t have a lot of time. It gets the job done!

I agree, Jillian Michaels gets right down to business and doesn’t waste any time. I really like her workouts because for the most part they’re so quick.
